㉗ Whales Bones
㉗ Humpback Whale Bones
〜Traces of a Giant of the Sea on Tebajima’s Shore〜
There is something rather unusual to discover along the coast of Tebajima — the bones of a humpback whale, one of the giants of the ocean.
Humpback whales are known for their enormous pectoral fins and spectacular leaps out of the water. They can grow to around 15 metres in length.
These magnificent creatures travel vast distances across the ocean. But how did the bones of one of these giants end up on this tiny island?
Exactly when and how the bones arrived on Tebajima’s shore remains a mystery.
Yet they offer a fascinating reminder of the connection between this small island, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the many creatures that live beneath its waves.
As you listen to the gentle sound of the waves, imagine the enormous whale that once swam freely through the open sea.
While exploring Tebajima, why not see if you can find these remarkable remains?
A Note of Caution:
The rocks along the shore can be slippery. Please watch your step and be mindful of the waves. Avoid touching the bones so they can remain undisturbed for others to appreciate.
