出羽島の大池に生きる「生きた化石」〜シラタマモ〜
出羽島の山の中にある「大池」には、世界的にも珍しい藻類「シラタマモ」が自生しています。
シラタマモは、太古の姿を今に残す「生きた化石」とも呼ばれる貴重な植物です。
大池は、海水と淡水が混ざり合う特殊な環境にあり、シラタマモの生育に適した場所となっています。
その貴重さから、1972年に「出羽島大池のシラタマモ自生地」として国の天然記念物に指定されました。
生育が盛んな時期：5月〜8月頃
水中に生育しているため、池の外からは見えにくいこともあります。
静かな森に囲まれた大池は、出羽島の豊かな自然と長い歴史を感じられる場所です。

㉕ Shiratamamo: A Living Fossil
〜Oike Pond, Tebajima〜
Hidden in the hills of Tebajima, Oike Pond is home to Shiratamamo, an extremely rare species of algae often called a “living fossil.”
The pond’s unique mixture of seawater and freshwater provides an ideal habitat for this ancient species.
In 1972, the pond was designated a National Natural Monument.
Growing season: May–August
Shiratamamo grows underwater and may be difficult to see from the shore.
Surrounded by peaceful forest, Oike Pond is one of Tebajima’s hidden natural treasures.
